Management Organization

Most hospital executives agree that a functioning hospital management structure, especially at the top of the organization, is essential to the effective operation of the enterprise and the winning performance of the executive team. When roles, responsibilities, accountabilities and reporting relationships are not well defined, problems arise that can dramatically impede progress toward the organization’s goals.

Our work is directed at identifying opportunities for strengthening the top management structure, which enables better management of the many challenges facing the hospital. In doing this we typically interview each member of the top management team as well as selected leaders of the medical staff and the Board. We solicit their opinions regarding the effectiveness of the present organization structure, its strengths and weaknesses, and perceived opportunities for improving alignment with the institution’s strategic plan. In addition, we review bylaws, meeting minutes, organization charts, financial reports, the strategic plan and other relevant materials.

Unfortunately, issues around structure are seldom as simple as putting people in boxes on a chart, clarifying job descriptions and drawing lines to indicate reporting relationships. While this step is necessary, real effectiveness comes only from matching people’s talents with the needs of a particular job. We get at this issue through the use of assessments that benchmark job requirements and compare people’s behavioral traits, motivators and personal competencies to the benchmark. View a sample Job/Personal Comparison report. Prepared with this information, we work with you to assure that the right people are in the right positions.

Our recommendations are tailored to your specific situation and typically include an organization chart, specific recommendations for realignment and a detailed plan of implementation that includes the action to be taken, the person or group responsible, resource requirements and a timeframe for completion.

When coaching is needed to reach organizational goals, we work with the executive management team and its members to move them collectively and individually to a higher level of effectiveness.
