Strategic Planning

Too often organizations go through a strategic planning process, only to produce a weighty document that sits on a shelf, thus wasting scarce resources and valuable time.

We approach strategic planning to move a client to action – action that meets community needs and differentiates the organization from its competition. We focus on achieving clarity on the mission and vision of the organization and establishing strategic priorities. This is done within a realistic financial framework to effectively move the organization toward its ultimate vision for success.

To ensure buy-in and ownership of the final result, our planning process is inclusive. We often serve as facilitators, working closely with a strategic planning team composed of Board, physician and management leadership. This preferred approach ensures involvement and commitment from the people who will ultimately implement the plan. We also emphasize flexibility because the marketplace is constantly changing, and organizations must be able to adapt as changes occur.

Our approach is tailored to your needs and culture; we don’t believe in a cookie-cutter approach. If your data systems are well developed, we guide you in conducting the situation analysis. We focus on working with you to develop strategies that meet future development needs for the planning period (generally three to five years).

At the end of the process, when implementation actions have been assigned to individuals and groups, we help you align your organizational structure to meet your strategic needs. We can help determine the need for new positions and develop the job descriptions for needed new positions, determine measurable accountabilities for superior performance, benchmark jobs, and use scientifically developed and validated assessment tools to differentiate potential candidates.

The results of a strategic planning project often include identifying priorities, such as:

  • Collaboration with neighboring institutions
  • Affiliation with a medical school
  • Establishment of joint ventures

We will assist you in implementing these and other priorities.
